Making Learning Visible

I attended SXSW EDU and spoke at the Instructional Technology Council conference.

Different audiences. Different formats.

But a common theme emerged:

The power of making thinking visible.

At SXSW EDU, I observed sessions focused on accessibility and design, about rethinking everyday objects, sketching ideas in real time, and creating experiences that encourage participation rather than passive consumption.

In my own session, I took a similar approach.

No slides.

No lecture.

Just a simple prompt and a handful of LEGO bricks.

The result was immediate: engagement, interaction, and a level of focus that’s becoming increasingly rare.

This confirms something I see regularly in my own classroom:

engagement doesn’t come from more content or more technology. It comes from creating opportunities for people to externalize their thinking.

When ideas are visible, they become shareable. When they are shareable, they become collaborative. And that’s where meaningful learning begins.

Sometimes, innovation looks like advanced tools.

And sometimes, it looks like a quirky duck.
